The current owner of an existing home should maintain utilities, gas, water, and electrical service, until the day of closing. However, some individuals move out of the home prior to closing and may shut off utilities. If the utilities are fully disconnected, they are often much more expensive to reconnect. This is true because the utility company has removed meter centers or gauges and must reinstall them when you ask that service be changed to your name.
